The Gardens at Connolly Ranch
Nestled on a hillside in Browns Valley, “The Gardens at Connolly Ranch” is a garden demonstration area tended by dedicated Master Gardener volunteers. This space highlights for Napa County home gardeners the importance of using research-based good gardening practices to plant and care for every imaginable category of garden plants. Raised beds demonstrate water-thrifty mediterranean and California native plants, fire-wise gardening principles as well as habitats for birds, bees and butterflies. A seasonal showcase of vegetables, herbs, edible flowers and fruit trees delights visitors to the gardens. The master gardeners conduct field tests of different varieties of vegetables to determine best selections for Napa County. Composting and soil building techniques are practiced and taught, and the gardens are the site of public workshops and demonstrations, allowing hands-on experience for UC Master Gardeners and the public. It’s not all business, though. Beautiful roses are central to the garden. A good representation of the huge salvia family has their own corner of the garden. Don’t miss the welcoming “fragrance field,” a picture-perfect dwarf pomegranate and the succulent garden. This is a great place to soak up a little country in the city.
